Alaska Day 39 To Seward & Tsunami

We had a 95 mile trip to Seward this morning. The road down to Seward was very good. Our site is right on the water of Resurrection Bay. $15 no hook ups.DSC_0163

On the way to Seward we saw some fishing going on. I call it combat fishing.DSC_0001

Later in the day the water came up to within 30 feet of our rig. We had one harbor seal and several sea otters playing in our front yard off and on during the day.DSC_0167

I will skip what we did during the day and go right to the Tsunami.  About 8:30 we heard a very loud siren that was Seward wide. Then the announcement of a Tsunami warning. There was a 7.3 earthquake down in the Aleutian Islands. Needleless to say things got hoping in the campground.  People were jumping in their cars and leaving. RVs were pulling out leaving their outside chairs, barbeques, etc. I’ve learned over the years not to immediately jump thru hoops and not to get in a potential mob type setting.  It was not a mob put the potential was very high. We turned on the RV radio - no mention, we turned on the Emergency weather station – no mention, we had two local TV channels – no mention.  Meanwhile the sirens along with the verbal warnings were continuing. We got the RV ready to move but still sat. I noticed the warnings did not say to evacuate or to go to high ground.  This seemed unusual to me. The lack of this information meant to me that there must be a lag of time involved.  About 15 minutes later a fire truck was coming around saying it was a false alarm.  Then a few minutes after the fire truck left the City Manager came around and talked to us. I thanked him for the entertainment and the adventure which he just laughed and replied that’s what they are here for. Sharon & Don and there dog Shadow evacuated to high ground leaving their Tiffin behind.  That was a wise choice. Tee Hee…I called them and gave them the all clear.  I’m glad my cell phone could reach them on top of the hill there in the background…..smile.DSC_0162
