Augie’s RV Park In Gila Bend

Well we drove a big 135 miles today from Quartzsite to Gila Bend, AZ.  We had a stumpy RV (38 ft) following us here all the way.  It was Denny Orr and his two cats.  Susie Orr is in KY taking care of some medical needs.  It was sure nice to be going down the highway again.  It was a very nice tiny trip.  The sun was out and no wind.  Saw a lot of little lakes and running water in the desert.  I never saw that before.  It was due to that storm we had last Thursday.  We arrived at Augie’s RV Park.  It’s a pretty nice park and especially for being out here in the desert.  It’s a Escapees discount park.  Our site is huge.  I think it’s the biggest sight we have ever had.  50 AMP full hook up.  In January we have experienced being the “butt” of jokes, traveling to Qsite - fast, temps as low as 15 degrees, frozen pipes, a severe storm, dirty wheels, in the desert boone docking for 14 days, cooking for 40 people and you know what, It Was An Adventure and we wouldn’t change a thing.  This is what it’s all about folks – it was friggin great! Here’s our view out our window.  We got full hook up, the wheels are starting to shine, the sun will shine today and we are with damn good friends.  Isn’t life great!

Pot Luck & Prize Give Away Day In Quartzsite

Saturday started out with coffee and danish for those early risers (by 9 AM)

Let’s take a better look.  Mark had this black smudge on his face for a week – just joking – it was two weeks.

 

We had a lot of great food.  Brenda – Carol said no more beans for me!  It was a warm night…

Hey, a little barbeque sauce and warming them up on the coals.  It don’t get to much better.

 

Dinner time and we ate. Yes, plenty of food left over.  We had a drawing for the left over smoked pork.

Some of us got up and told stories.  This is Denny Orr telling his famous up or down cruise ship joke.  Did he really tell that joke again – yep, new audience.

 

And we ate more as the sun started to settle.  Then we had the fun prize drawings.  Everybody liked their special “fun” gifts…..

This was our last full day of our little get together.  We had 23 rigs show up and fed 44 people.  Down from last year due to the real bad weather we had just a couple of days ago.  Sunday we head for Gila Bend and Augie’s RV Park to participate in the Escapee’s Boot Camp – Let’s roll….See Ya……….

A SPECIAL NOTE…We had a couple coming to our get together who lost their rig (turn over) in Blyth during the tornado last Thursday.  We are glad that they are alive and are sorry they lost their newly purchased (used) RV.  Us RVers can only imagine what’s it like to go through something like that.  Again, glad you all are safe and wish the Mrs a speedy recovery from a broken ankle and ribs.

Rain Rain It Will Go Away

This is a look out our front window here in Quartzsite.  It rained and stormed a lot.

 

Here is the middle of our area and that blue tarp is covering some of our wood.  Yes, that is a small stream running through the middle.

 

 

Then it cleared up.  The two pair of legs are a false indicator of what the weather is really like.  I won’t mention Frank Hinman and Art Fennell’s names.  Those who know them know this to be normal behavior for them.  Also, we know who is who.

 

The picture below is the real indicator of what the weather is like – about 50 or so with a wind that makes it seem colder.  This is our first 4 o’clock.  Everybody appeared to kinda forget about the cold and was telling stories to new and old friends.  It was pretty nice.

 

It’s very early Saturday morning I’m getting ready to start the coffee and set out the danish for the early risers (before 9AM).

Today (Sat) is our cook out one way or another.  The mesquite smoked pulled pork will be ready for it’s barbeque touch up with a little slaw and Brenda’s beans this PM.  Whew, my mouth is  already watering.  I am sure those who are here and weathered the storm will say it was worth it  after this evening of eats and then the fun give aways.  The give aways were a hoot last year..

What is Dessert, Winds, Rain, RV & Roads ?

Answer - Name five things that does not make a good combination.

Sorry, this is the best picture I could get under these conditions. This was taken after the water had receded on our trip back from Yuma (car).

And the rest of the story is…….

Carol & I had to go to Yuma early (6AM) to pick up some rally items.  Boy oh boy.  Yes it was raining.  Going south on state road 95 we ran into about six water crossings.  One was probably about 8-10 inches deep and I think it was going faster than we were.  I think my seat has new stains.  Well, we get down to Yuma and did our shopping.  Then the winds kicked up like really bad.  They closed down the big flea market in Yuma and started closing schools because of the current wind/rain and expected rain/wind.  Then we unofficially heard that state road 95 was closed.  We started heading back (north).  No south bound traffic.  That was a sign.  About 20 miles into the trip we saw this very very very very long line of vehicles and they were coming south.  To me that meant the road is now open and it was.  We get back to camp safely but a little wet from our adventure down south.  It was still raining and the wind was picking up.  About 2-3 PM someone turned on the friggin outside fan full blast and it was bad.  We heard that 3 tractor trailers had  turned over in nearby Blythe.  The winds were probably in the 40 mph range with long gusts way above that.  The radio reported gusts up to 90 mph and we believe it.  Everybody put in their slides and hunkered down.  We had some en route people call us and wanted how the weather was.  We told them not to move and to hunker down because it was real bad.  It rocked our rig the most we have ever been rocked in over 35 years of RVing.  It was that bad by anyone’s account!  About 5 or so the worst was over and a few daring souls went out to look around.    Anything outside had moved around but was within a days walk.  You know, it makes this year a memorable year. The ole, “Oh yea I was their for that!” will be heard for years to come.  

Oh, no pictures because I wasn’t even thinking about going outside much less with a camera.  We did have a couple of later arrivals. They said they were glad they hunkered down earlier and all is safe.

Thursday night wasn’t quite as bad. Our slides were in and the datastorm satellite dish was put down again before bedtime (9PM).  The sun is not up yet but Friday will bring us all together to compare stories.  It’s a great lifestyle….See Ya..

A Few More People

People are starting to roll into our area. Dick Reed had to leave this AM because of a very important Dr appointment back in Applegate, CA. Plus he had a fuel filter problem later on his way home. 

Today’s weather started out OK.  Then early afternoon it went down hill.  It started with some rain and wind.  Then someone turned on the friggin windmill.  We brought in all four slides which we have seldom had to do.

Earlier Mark Nemeth made some turkey/sausage gumbo for us and Denny & Susie Orr.  He has his gumbo recipe down real good.  If Mark fixes his gumbo and I do my chili for dinner, people would not have so much problems I think with their bottom end.  It’s like a  natural food rotor rooter – kills everything quickly and smoothly.

Since you all know what rain and wind looks like I didn’t take any pictures of it – it looks the same everywhere.  So I went back in time and pulled some pictures.

 

What else should you do when a giant frog is watching?  They don’t care when we watch them.

 

A man in heaven.  Tabasco factory store – oh what a relief it will be down the road !? The picture was taken this past November during our stay at Betty’s RV Park.

Betty's’ gathering place in Abbeville, LA.  What a hoot of a place.  We where their in Nov and will be back in April.

 

Lou Reed passed away last year.  Although she didn’t remember much these past few years, she always remembered to say her favorite saying, “Isn’t this a great life!".   Lou – yes it is and thanks for reminding us.

Monday Monday

I think there was a song out by a group (Mama’s & Papa’s ?) back in the 60s called Monday Monday.

The light rain came in last night and it was off and on but light.  The morning was cloudy with no rain. No rain the rest of the day.

 

Above – this is Kelly being Kelly.  Some call her THE bag lady and I’m still trying to figure out why.

 

 

Let’s see, from left to right – Denny Orr, Dick Reed, Mark Nemeth, & Walt Gunn.  We had smoked pork tenderloin in mushroom sauce with potato, green bean casserole and salad.  Those are Mark’s little brown bottles on the table.  Mark said to tell everybody that he doesn’t sleep in that little red trailer.  Why waste good space on sleeping – that’s his brewery.

 

Here are the girls – Susie Orr, Carol Hill and the none other again Kelly Gunn –Walt’s grand child – at least that’s what Walt says.  Kelly says, “Walt who!”.

Hey we all had a great time and that’s what RVing is all about – seeing, making friends and just having a good time.  Everybody said let’s do it again tomorrow night.  Mark is fixing Gumbo.

No rain is still the predicted for Saturday and AM showers Friday.

Just Another Beautiful Day

 

This is Dick Reed’s Bus.  He will be out here for a few days but has to return home by this Thursday.  I think he really wants to stay bad.  Doctors rule – sometimes.

 

This is Mark Nemeth’s home on wheels.  He sleeps in his little red wagon!

Then it got tired of it and tried to hide from us. It wanted to go home.

 

Now this is real fine dust.  Wait till it rains tomorrow – instant fun….

This is the turn off La Paz road (MM 99.5 area). It’s pretty crowded at the entrance.  It thins out some as you go back.

The weather people are saying rain starting tonight and off and on until Thursday.  Then the bucket is turned upside and we will be dumped on Thursday.  Friday morning clearing and sun the rest of the time we will be here.
