Alaska Day 71 Valdez Boat Trip

It’s a whale of a story butt here’s the end..

We went on a 6 hour cruise out of Valdez the Stan Stephens in the coupon book for $125.  What a deal.  the weather stated off rainy.  15 minutes into the trip it cleared up pretty nice.  Later on it drizzled a little but the rain was not a hinder at all.  We saw just about everything you could see on a cruise.  Here just a few pictures….  

 

 

The Columbia Glacier was friggin HUGE….here are some pictures that don’t do it any justice.

Here’s the young captain (single) explaining the glacier.. She’s been a captain for 11 years.  She knows the history of these areas/water and shared her knowledge.  Her narrative alone was outstanding.

Butch wanted to hear more.

Well, it turned into one hell of a good 7 1/2 hour cruise and it seemed like everybody was happy, happy, happy.  We were!   THE END……

We got back to camp and Mark was here.  Us guys sat out and BSed each other until we couldn’t stand it any longer.

Alaska Day 70 Valdez

Oh it started raining about 3 AM and continued all day. Sometimes it rained hard but most of the time a light rain. It’s called normal here.

We slept in until after 8 AM.  Why not!  We got a call from Nancy & Steve O’Bosky that they were on their way here.  BUT they were limping in.  Two bolts had sheared off part of their suspension and they weren’t sure if they can make it.  We made a plan.  If they weren’t here by 1 PM we would go looking for them and figure it from there.  Come about 12:45 PM we were getting ready to leave and they pulled in still limping.  Not sure what they will do.

Seems like everybody is seeing bears today except us.  Butch/Kathy saw a bear feeding at the fish hatchery.  Ed/Sandy & Steve/Nancy saw one near there too.  It’s the right place right time I guess.  It reminds me of Hyder and seeing bears there, not many and not too often.

I think our Jeep grew two extra doors…

Butch & Kathy came over in the evening and we watched their videos of the bears.  That was cool.

A quiet day all in all.

Alaska Day 69 In Valdez

The drive of 70 miles to Valdez was nice.  It was sunny out and the road was OK.  Up here that’s a lot.  We arrived at the military campground.  They had 30 AMP large sites for $30.  We took 3 sites.

And the nearby Valdez Glacier….

Then across the bay at Solomon Gulch the salmon were deep and running upstream  

 

The Valdez oil terminal.  This is where the Alaska Oil Pipe Line ends.

Alaska Day 68 Headed For Valdez

But wait.  We have a special spot that we have camped at every time we’ve been here in Alaska.  It’s about 200 miles from here in Anchorage and 70 miles north of Valdez at MM72  It’s a pull off with a view of the pipeline in the distance which is difficult to see in this picture.

A very very quiet night…..

Tomorrow we head for Valdez.  We’re not sure where we are staying.  Maybe at the military campground.  If it’s full, maybe some boone docking.  What it is, is what it is.
