Alaska Day 23 Palmer & A Lazy Day

This morning Carol & I decided to drive the 32 miles to base and check the campground and bringing in guests. Well, we got there about 9:30 AM and there was a sign on the host’s door that they would not return until 3 PM. That shot that idea of getting information.  We still drove around the campground and nothing had changed since our last stay two years ago.  There were about a dozen or so empty sites for sure. We got gas in the car on base and it was $4.12 a gallon and diesel was $4.39.  Propane was $3.59.  I’m not sure if I will fill up with diesel before we get into a campsite or when we leave. Probably when we leave since fuel is going down in price. On the way back we stopped at the Eagle River State Park. Very nice park with paved roads and big long sights, lots of trees.  Big enough for any size RV in almost all of the sights. $18 a night no hook ups and water/dump available.  This is one of the signs to the park. Better not make a wrong turn here!

 

Don just told me they just realized that their moonroof on their Honda car was shattered but still holding together.  There part will not be in until next week so they will get installed on our way back up here.  It’s been drizzling all day and expected to be for another week at least. Hope the window holds together. Break out the duct tape and we did along with some transport film.

Then of course we had our social hour.  It did do some hard sprinkles earlier today but has since stopped.

People went out and did this and that.  So much for a lazy kinda of day.

Alaska Day 22 To Palmer

We are going to go a Passport America Park 32 miles away but they won’t take anyone until after 11 AM.  So, here we set along the road side listening to the Matanuska River rushing by, watching the white crisp clouds passing the mountains with a deep blue sky background and the overall amazement of the scenery while time passes on.  Oh pity us – yea right you say…..and you would be right…

Our 3 campsites (white front RVs). It’s the Homestead RV Park, Passport America (PA), $16.50 W/E (30 AMP). Nice little park, two day max under PA.

Then in front of our RV’s we have this. Ho hummmm.

We were only going to stay one night but this park is so nice and only $16.50 we decided to stay another night. The advantage of having no schedule. Next thing we know Pat & Jim come rolling in. Then it was last but not least Don & Sharon. The gang is almost all here.  Our wounded one, Jean & Claudette are broke in Valdez. I called Jean later in the day and he is actively working on getting their RV repaired.  He does have a torn air bag. While they were checking it out he moved his large slide in and burnt the motor. So he has parts being flown in from LA and Fairbanks and a mechanic lined up to do the work.  Plus his extended RV warranty is working with him.  I expect he will be with us come this Friday, hope so.  We all offered to pick up/deliver what ever parts he needed but it don’t look we will be needed. He’s in a campground with electric and water available plus he has WiFi.  Hey, if you’re going to be broke down, it don’t get much better.

Later we had a social hour out in the sun watching the mountains making sure the snow didn’t melt to quick.

Then we all decide to go to a local restaurant called The Noisy Goose.  We had a good time with good friends and good food.  The waitress survived another bunch of old loud people.

Then it was another quiet night….

Alaska Day 21 Towards Palmer fr Valdez

Well, here we go and don’t know for sure where we will end up but we do know what direction we are going in. Heading north for awhile then hanging a left on to the Glenn Highway towards Palmer. We have plenty of fuel being that we have only gone 265 miles from our last fill up in Tok.  We can go a very safe 800 miles on a tank. Water we have about 30 gallons left.

Four us was getting ready to pull out when one of us broke. Jean & Claudette’s rig wouldn’t air up in the front.  No air no drive that simple.  Jean was the smallest so he got to climb under his rig especially since it was his too. It appears that he might have a hole in a air bag. Nothing we could do on a Sunday morning. Don/Sharon & Jim & Pat were going to stay another day and now Jean/Claudette were to. Alaska Day 20 Valdez

It’s a WOW day….two eagles setting on/near their nest in our campground.

 

This is what did happen! It’s an eagle…sad..

The day a 9.2 earthquake hit Valdez and the town was destroyed.  They moved the town about 6 miles south to it’s present location.

This is an Alaskan pig. It goes inside the 4 foot diameter oil pipeline and moves 6 MPH to clean the inside of the pipe. I sure don’t want this used to clean my pipes.

  They even had people shooting signs way back when…

Alaska Day 19 Valdez

It got wetter today (Fri) here in Valdez.  Yesterday (Thur)was pretty nice and it was a great day to take that boat tour 6 hour ride. The  weekenders (fisherman) have been rolling in. I would not say they are RVers but are fisherman. There is a definite difference.  If it doesn’t directly relate to fishing they evidently don’t care to much about it. I was one many years ago so I understand a little bit. It’s like golfing but with a pole.  You just know you can do it.  Get that little ball in the hole or catch the big one. 

Today was a recovery day for us. The boat trip was outstanding but tiring. Today we went to the post office and did a little looking around in the gift shops. There’s one next to the Prospector Outfitter shop that I would classify as organized clutter kinda of. It just about has everything but not much of anything.  It’s a fun place to stop if you get this way. I got a double insulated watch cap there. Yesterday evening I got some chicken gizzards at the Safeway. They were over cooked as it turned out. I called them and told them about it. They said bring them back. Today I did that and they refunded double my money. You can’t beat that.

We went back to the Halibut House for diner. This was our third time because we haven’t decided how great it was yet. It’s a fast food place specializing in fish/burgers,shrimp & stuff.  I got 4 pieces of mixed fish and fries for $10. That’s real good up here where a veggie pizza will cost you $21 at a pizza joint.

Temps been in the 50’s during the day and 40s at night, rainy and even some wind. Not set outside weather for sure.  Tomorrow we leave and head towards Palmer which is 270 miles.  Matanuska Glacier State Rec Site is along the way so we might stay there a night or two.
